We are now accepting applications for LIAs and registration and approval as per MIN 524/594 and associated MSNs 1857, 1859 and 1865, as applicable.

We offer a number of services:

  • LIA/TRB issue for alternative route
  • TRB Issue for experienced seafarer route
  • TRB Issue for those already with an LIA issued
  • Official registration for those already with a TRB which needs to be formally approved for the alternative route.

LIA/TRB issue for alternative route

To make an application to be considered under the alternative route - graduate engineer/HND/HNC/apprenticeship holders - you will need to provide the following evidence by email:

  • Copy of your award certificate
  • Copy of your academic transcript
  • If overseas institution - copy of NARIC compatibility letter, as well as English translation (as appropriate)
  • Any training undertaken that may apply to allow for exemptions to be considered. It is your responsibility to provide evidence and mapping of how your qualifications and experience meet the MCA criteria. We can provide you with details of the requirements to assist you with this.

You will also need to pay a one-off application fee of £180. This fee is non-refundable - please ensure you're confident regarding your eligibility.

When we have received all of the above, our LIA panel will consider your application and you will be notified of the outcome within six to eight weeks. This process includes the issuance of an official training record book, together with a formal registration letter giving details of your unique registration number and official start date.

TRB issue for experienced seafarer route

To make an application to be considered under the experienced seafarer route and to officially register and be issued with a training record book, you must provide the following information by email:

  • 24 months' on-board yacht service on vessels of at least 200kW, which must include a minimum of six months' seagoing service (days spent underway). This needs to be approved by the PYA.
  • Hold an Approved Engine Course 1 and Approved Engine Course 2 - a copy of your certificates is required.
  • Hold the STCW basic safety training certificates:
    • Personal Survival Techniques (STCW Code A-VI/1-1)
    • Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (STCW Code A-VI/1-2)
    • Elementary First Aid (STCW Code A-VI/1-3)
    • Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (STCW Code A-VI/1-4)

You will also need to pay a one-off application fee of £60. This fee is non-refundable - please ensure you're confident regarding your eligibility.

When we have received all of the above, your evidence will be assessed and you will be advised of the outcome within four to six weeks and you will be issued with a training record book and official registration letter.

TRB Issue for those already with an LIA issued

If you have already been issued with an LIA by us or from another institution, we are able to formally register you and issue you with a training record book if you provide the following by email:

  • Copy of your LIA and details of when and where it was issued from.

You will also need to pay a one-off fee of £40. This fee is non-refundable - please ensure you're confident regarding your eligibility and that your LIA is valid.

When we have received the above, your application will be considered and you will be advised of the outcome within four to six weeks and you will be issued with a training record book and official registration letter.

Official registration for those already with a TRB which needs to be formally approved for the alternative route

If you have already purchased a training record book prior to the changes made by the MCA and require official registration and formal approval for the alternative route, we are able to do this if you provide the following by email:

  • Copy of the LIA you have been issued and details of when and where issued from

You will also need to pay a one-off fee of £10

When we have received the above, we will issue you with an official registration letter and number to you within two to three weeks.
