About this course

This five-day induction course is the first of two courses required by The Nautical Institute in the dynamic positioning training scheme. The course focuses on the theoretical aspects of dynamic positioning (DP) - students are instructed on the main components of DP and its features. With a background knowledge of DP systems and its multiple functions, students would be in a good position to go on board a DP equipped vessel to acquire sea time.

Practical exercises are conducted on Class C simulators, through which students become familiar with dynamic positioning software features and application, and differing operational and environmental constraints.

What you'll learn

The course provides an introduction to the principles of operation, elements of DP systems, system operation and control modes, sensor inputs, thrusters and power generation, vessel capabilities, and control console and displays, along with practical exercises on DP workstations.

On completion of the course, trainees will receive a DP logbook. Trainees can then go on board a DP vessel to complete the required 60 days' DP sea time and complete the tasks in their logbooks before returning for the Dynamic Positioning Simulator course.

Prerequisites

Students must be licensed deck officers, naval officers, or maritime cadets currently in training but not qualified as deck officers.
