About this course

Paperless bridge operations - using ECDIS to replace the paper chart - have become the focus of much attention from national and international administrative bodies and seafarers from all quarters of the maritime community. This course has been developed at the request of several industry majors to meet their needs in this significant change to ‘traditional’ practices and to assist in their transition to paperless navigation.

The course is designed for bespoke company training and optimised for four candidates ranging in rank from master to third officer. This allows participants to rotate through all roles and appreciate the difficulties and differences of each position.

What you'll learn

The five-day course includes all the requirements of the normal bridge team management course, including emergencies and dealing with pilots, but all navigation is carried out using the ECDIS systems. Different ECDIS systems may be fitted and used in the bridge simulator, depending on customer requirements.

Company procedures are used to add to the realism, while changes to procedures can be tested in a safe environment before being used at sea.

On completion of training, you should be able to:

  • use ECDIS as the primary means of navigation,
  • appraise and formulate a detailed passage plan, and
  • execute the plan and demonstrate a sound understanding of proper bridge team management.

Prerequisites

You should have a minimum of six months' experience as a watchkeeping deck officer.

You should also have completed an MCA-recognised Generic ECDIS course to IMO Model 1.27 standard.
