About this course

This three-day updating course is for Masters and other personnel designated to take charge of medical care on UK or EU flagged vessels who are required to undertake updating training in Proficiency in Medical Care every five years. The classroom-based course is delivered as a combination of theory sessions and practical exercises.

The course is intensive in nature and will require a certain amount of self-study in the evenings in preparation for the next day. A good working knowledge of the Ship’s Captain Medical Guide and MSN 1905 (Ships Medical Stores) prior to course commencement would be highly advantageous, as would knowledge of the current provision for medical care on your vessel.

Prerequisites

  • You must hold either a Proficiency in Medical Care certificate or an Updated Proficiency in Medical Care certificate. Documentary evidence of meeting these prerequisites will be required at course enrolment.
  • Please note that the Master and the person designated in charge of the medical provision onboard a UK flagged vessel must update the PMC at least every five years.

What you'll learn

On completion, delegates will have an updated knowledge of medical stores and equipment on board in order to be able to maintain the required standard of competence in providing medical care and first aid on board a vessel.
