About this course
The Small Ships Radar and Meteorology course provides you with the essential education and training needed to use radar and obtain information to maintain a safe navigational watch on small vessels.
This course is intended for all masters of commercially operating small vessels (<24m) using radar, and any crew responsible for radar working on these vessels that have not undertaken appropriate approved training. Candidates for this course are recommended to have completed the Small Ships Electronic Charting System (approved) and Bridge Watchkeeping course prior to attendance and have experience working on small vessels.
This course replaces part of the Small Ships Navigation and Radar course and can be taken together with the Small Ships Electronic Charting System (approved) and Bridge Watchkeeping course which immediately precedes this one. If a candidate has booked both courses, this course follows on from the other and forms a five day period of training which runs Monday to Friday (concluding at 2.30pm on the final day). Booking both courses at the same time is encouraged to avoid disappointment. Alternatively, they can be taken at different times to provide flexibility around work and other commitments.
What you'll learn
Training takes place in multi-function classrooms in the world-class Maritime Simulation Centre at Warsash Maritime School, where you will also use desktop simulators to undertake practical training in the use of a variety of electronic navigation aids.
The competency addressed is:
- Maintain a safe navigation watch by using marine radar and meteorological information.
Practical exercises using the desktop simulators reinforce the theory and provide an opportunity to develop and practise use of electronic bridge navigation systems.
The training takes place over three days, starting after lunchtime on day one and finishing at lunchtime on day three. At the end of the course, successful candidates will be awarded with a certificate of completion issued under the authority of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) of the United Kingdom of Great Britain.
Prerequisites
- It is recommended that candidates have completed the Small Ships Electronic Charting System (approved) and Bridge Watchkeeping course prior to attendance, have experience of working on small vessels, and hold a level of certification that permits commercial operation of small vessels in Area Category of Operation 6 or above.
- Delegates shall verbally confirm on the day that they are fit and well enough to participate in practical exercises.
