About this course

The Small Ships Electronic Charting System (approved) and Bridge Watchkeeping course provides candidates with the essential education and training needed to keep a safe navigational watch and to use electronic charts and other electronic aids to maintain safe navigation on small vessels, meeting knowledge, understanding and proficiency (KUP) requirements.

This course is intended for all masters and any crew responsible for navigation on commercially operating small vessels (<24m).

This course replaces part of the Small Ships Radar and Navigation course and can be taken together with the new Small Ships Radar and Meteorology course which follows on immediately afterwards. The Small Ships Electronic Charting System (approved) and Bridge Watchkeeping course finishes at lunchtime on the third day of training. If a candidate has also booked the Small Ships Radar and Meteorology course, this starts immediately after lunch and carries on until 2.30pm on the fifth day. Booking both courses at the same time is encouraged to avoid disappointment. Alternatively, they can be taken at different times to provide flexibility around work or other commitments.

What you'll learn

Training takes place in multi-function classrooms in the world-class Maritime Simulation Centre at Warsash Maritime School, where you will also use desktop simulators to undertake practical training in the use of a variety of electronic navigation aids.

The competencies addressed are:

  • Planning and conducting a coastal passage and determining position;
  • Maintaining a safe navigational watch.

The training takes place over three days and at the end of the course successful candidates will be awarded a certificate of completion issued under the authority of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) of the United Kingdom of Great Britain.

Prerequisites

  • It is essential for candidates to have a basic understanding of navigational principles prior to attendance.
  • It is recommended that candidates have experience of navigating small vessels and hold a level of certification that permits commercial operation in Area Category of Operation 6 or above.
  • Delegates shall verbally confirm on the day that they are fit and well enough to participate in practical exercises.
