About this course

Our standard ship handling four-and-a-half-day course is suitable for masters, captains, senior deck officers and pilots to develop their existing skills and understand the behaviour and handling of large vessels with special emphasis on slow speed control.

The course is recognised by the MCA as meeting the principles laid down in Section A-II/2 and B-V/a of STCW95 regarding the training of officers on large ships. It includes an intensive period of exercises in the scaled manned ship models, supported by a programme of lectures and instruction at the ship handling centre. Specific situations encountered within the sphere of operations of individual students can be incorporated into the programme.

The practical aspects of the course cover:

  • Stopping and slow speed control
  • Turning manoeuvres
  • Berthing and unberthing manoeuvres
  • The effect of wind upon ship handling
