About this course
Transferring at sea to or from a vessel can be a dangerous activity where poor judgement, maintenance, and planning can lead to accidents in the marine environment.
This course has been developed to give persons transferring to a vessel or fixed platform the knowledge, understanding, and proficiency to safely transit to and from a work boat or pilot boat.
On request, this programme can be tailored to include your company’s specific guidelines.
What you'll learn
Over the course of the day your time will be spent learning the following:
- Regulatory framework including standards, construction and rigging.
- Different arrangements for ladders at sea.
- Operational procedures and boarding.
- Personal safety and emergency response.
- Practical sea survival and man overboard skills.
- Practical transfers to temporary and/or fixed marine ladders.
Created by maritime professionals at Warsash Maritime School, this programme undertakes study of current industry guidelines set out by the IMO, UK Marine Pilots Association (UKMPA) and International Marine Pilots Association (IMPA). You will be required to undertake practical training for boarding and ascending/descending a ladder over open water, and complete man overboard readiness training in an enclosed pool environment. The practical elements of this course have been developed to give both confidence and competence to be able to transfer safely, and how best to respond should an emergency occur.
Upon completion of your course, you will be issued with a certificate of Proficiency in Marine Transfers awarded by Warsash Maritime School and Southampton Solent University. It is recommended that this award be refreshed every two years.
