About this course

The one-day MCA Approved Boatmaster Fire Safety course is designed for skippers and crew of vessels less than 24 metres long including pilot vessels and workboats; those operating in category A to D inland waters such as canals, rivers, lakes and some estuaries; and individuals seeking to obtain their Boatmasters’ Licence (BML).

It is a time-saving cost effective alternative to the STCW Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting course.

Successful completion of the course fulfils the ancillary course requirement for those training for their Boatmasters’ Licence. However, it is not an STCW course and cannot be used in place of an STCW Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting course for vessels requiring STCW certification.

The course meets the requirements of The Workboat Code, and MSN 1853 (M) Amendment 1 – The Merchant Shipping (Boatmasters’ Qualifications, Crew and Hours of Work) Regulations 2015.

What you'll learn

MCA Approved Boatmaster Fire Safety is taught in the classroom and on the fire ground at our Warsash campus.

Those attending will learn about the theoretical elements of fire and combustion theory, and undertake practical exercises in fire fighting including the use of extinguishers and fire blankets.

The course is assessed through ongoing questions and answers, and the successful completion of practical exercises.

Fulfilling the requirements of the course will prepare delegates to respond appropriately to fire on board workboats of less than 24 metres in length.

Prerequisites

Delegates should have the physical ability to carry out practical exercises on the fire ground.

Guidance for delegates who are pregnant and wish to undertake training:

For safety reasons, we are unable to accept bookings for this course for delegates in the second or third trimester of a pregnancy when the training would take place.

Delegates who are, or think they may be, pregnant and wish to undertake training in the first trimester of their pregnancy should contact wms.shortcoursesales@solent.ac.uk before booking the course to obtain guidance regarding documentary prerequisite requirements.
