About this course

From 1 January 2021 the IMO mandated that ship owners and managers must incorporate cyber risk management into ship safety. IMO guidance stipulates that each vessel shall have a nominated cyber security officer.

This course introduces the key principles of maritime cyber security and best practice as defined by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) and NCSC (GCHQ), preparing nominated cyber security officers and other key personnel to take on the relevant responsibilities.

The course is produced in a partnership between Warsash Maritime School and cyber security experts, Cyber Prism, with guidance from Pelion Consulting, who conduct IMO–based cyber security assessments across the maritime industry.

What you'll learn

The course is designed to improve cyber security awareness and develop skills to identify, risk-manage, protect, and recover from cyber attacks in the maritime domain.

By the end of the course, students will have a clear understanding of the types of vulnerabilities which exist, the types of threats the industry faces, and what they need to do to protect themselves and their vessels.

Upon successful completion of the course and passing the online exam, students will receive a certificate of attainment which counts towards continued professional development (CPD) training. They will also receive a set of useful guidelines for effective implementation of cyber security, including a glossary of technical terms.

Students should have completed the two-hour online Proficiency in Cyber Security Hygiene course before undertaking this course.
