About this course

This course provides a route to convert the STCW Basic Training Week to a BOSIET with CA-EBS, enabling delegates to work in the oil and gas industry and travel offshore.

The course is aimed at those who are new to or returning to the offshore oil and gas industry but who have been part of the marine industry and have undertaken STCW 95/2010 Basic Safety Training, or the corresponding refresher training, and have also undertaken the OPITO Minimum Industry Safety Training (MIST) or International Minimum Industry Safety Training (IMIST).

What you'll learn

The course will enable delegates to:

  • gain a basic understanding and appreciation of offshore oil and gas operations,
  • identify key elements of living and working offshore,
  • demonstrate, in a simulated environment, that they can use the safety equipment, and follow procedures in preparing for, and during helicopter emergencies – with particular focus on escaping from a helicopter following a ditching,
  • demonstrate sea survival techniques, and
  • demonstrate that they can effectively use self-rescue equipment, and practise self-rescue techniques in low visibility situations, to include smoke-filled areas.

Prerequisites

Those wishing to take this course must hold valid STCW 95/2010 Basic Safety Training module certificates*, including:

  • Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting
  • Elementary First Aid
  • Personal Survival Techniques
  • Personal Safety and Social Responsibility

OR

Valid STCW refresher certificates including:

  • Updated Proficiency in Personal Survival Techniques
  • Updated Proficiency in Firefighting and Fire Prevention

* Certificates must be issued by training organisations located in International Maritime Organization (IMO) member states as detailed in MSC.1/Circ.1163/Rev12

AND

A valid OPITO Minimum Industry Safety Training (MIST) certificate or OPITO International MIST certificate.

Additional prerequisites for participation in CA-EBS In Water Training

OPITO require delegates to participate in CA-EBS In Water Training (IWT) exercises. As a result, delegates undertaking the STCW to BOSIET course will have to provide both the following at the point of enrolment:

1. Valid Offshore Energies (formerly OGUK) medical/or valid offshore medical issued by a body outside of the UK (recognised as equivalent to the OGUK). Other medical certificates recognised by the Diving at Work Regulations 1997 exemption DWR/1 of 2018 as being equivalent to an Oil and Gas UK Offshore medical certificate are:

  • Netherlands Oil and Gas Exploration and Production Association Medical
  • Norwegian Directorate of Health (Petroleum Sector medical)

AND

2. A ‘Fit’ or ‘Unfit’ to undertake shallow water CA-EBS training certificate issued by a registered OEUK (formerly OGUK) examiner. This should have been done within the lifespan of the current offshore medical.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: If you possess a valid and current UK ENG1 Seafarers Medical (or a recognised equivalent seafarers medical, as listed in MSN1815) or HSE certificate of medical fitness provided by an Approved Medical Examiner of Diving (AMED) you will not be required to undertake 1) and 2) above, as you have already met the requirements of the Diving at Work Regulations 1997. Delegates must bring their ENG 1 (or equivalent seafarers medical) or HSE dive medical (as above) to course enrolment on day one. For guidance regarding HSE approved diving medicals, please refer to the HSE website.

PLEASE NOTE: Conversion from the STCW Basic Training Week to a BOSIET with CA-EBS is covered by the OPITO Product Standard 5753.

Guidance for delegates who are pregnant and wish to undertake training:

Delegates who are or think they may be pregnant and wish to undertake training should contact wms.shortcoursesales@solent.ac.uk before booking the course to obtain guidance regarding the additional documentary pre-requisite requirements.
