About this course
This one-day course provides refresher training for holders of an in-date, OPITO-approved BOSIET or TBOSIET, or FOET or TFOET certificate.
The training covers the requirements for areas of offshore activities where Compressed Air Emergency Breathing Systems (CAEBS) are in use, inclusive Escape Chute Training (ECT) meets mandatory or company specific training requirements with this safety equipment. The combined training program is fully approved by OPITO with supporting certification (see below) and both accredited to their Vantage database upon successful completion.
Note: the maximum interval between the successful completion of BOSIET training and subsequent completion of FOET training is four years. Continuation training may be undertaken 90 days prior to the expiry date of existing certification. OPITO has authorised a 'renewal' window prior to a current certificate expiry date for any OPITO-approved 'further' (refresher) training course to be completed without being time-penalised.
View the dispensation rules if your BOSIET or FOET certificate has expired.
You will be eligible to receive a 10% discount against the cost of a Minimum Industry Safety Training (MIST) course when purchased at the same time as either FOET with Escape Chute Training or FOET with CAEBS and Escape Chute Training. Please email wms.shortcoursesales@solent.ac.uk to request a one-time discount code before you book online.
Certificate extension policy
This process has supported industry and the workforce during these challenging times. To date, more than 39,000 certificates have been extended under the policy.
OPITO's view is that it is vital the skills and competence of the workforce is maintained through regular training. Additionally, centres have now reopened in the majority of regions with physical distancing measures in place in training centres operating under national, regional and local government guidelines.
Due to the changing circumstances globally, OPITO has taken the decision to uphold the phase-out strategy, but to extend the date to 1 May 2021.
Certificate extension process
In March 2020, OPITO implemented a certificate extension process to support those impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. This process was originally scheduled to draw to a close on 1 May 2021. However, as situations continue to evolve in certain regions, OPITO has decided to continue to offer support for submitted certificate extensions - this is assuming they continue to be submitted in line with the exceptional eligibility criteria detailed in the current policy. The process, therefore, did not cease on 1 May 2021 and advanced warning of support being withdrawn will be communicated in due course and when suitable. More information can be found here.
What you'll learn
The combined course consists of two OPITO-approved training programmes:
Further Offshore Emergency Training (FOET) with CAEBS – complements and refreshes existing emergency training, updating and reinforcing the knowledge gained on the BOSIET course with regard to helicopter underwater escape training (HUET), use of CAEBS and sea survival techniques, emergency first aid, fire fighting and self-rescue techniques using smoke hoods.
This programmed is designed to meet the further offshore safety and emergency response training requirements for personnel working in the offshore oil and gas industry. Certification is issued with a four-year validity period.
Escape Chute Training (ECT) – introduces or refreshes both theoretical knowledge and practical exercises in the safe use of escape chutes increasingly used on offshore installations and vessels. Certification is valid for four years from the date of issue.
Escape chute training is an additional module developed by OPITO and acceptable under the Mutual Recognition of Basic and Refresher Safety and Emergency Preparedness Training agreement between Oil and Gas UK, Norsk olje og gass (Norway), Olie Gas Danmark (Denmark) and NOGEPA (Netherlands).
The Mutual Recognition document has been in effect since November 2007 and was revised in September 2014 to continue harmonising offshore survival training standards within sectors of the European North Sea. The course will satisfy the offshore survival training requirements for personnel intending to work in European sectors requiring compressed air emergency breathing systems (CAEBS). For European sectors not using CA-EBS please refer to the Mutual Recognition document to determine course applicability.
See our Further Offshore Emergency Training & Escape Chute Training course if you require emergency breathing system training (currently used in many areas of offshore activity outside UK and Dutch North Sea Sectors).

- Norwegian Directorate of Health (Petroleum Sector medical)
AND
- A ‘Fit’ or ‘Unfit’ to undertake shallow water CA-EBS training certificate issued by a registered OGUK examiner. This should have been done within the lifespan of the current offshore medical.
