About this course

Following the government’s guidance, from 4 April we will not be requiring delegates to undertake any testing before attending their course. However, it is strongly recommended that face coverings are worn when in enclosed spaces and where social distancing is not possible. There may also be some courses which still require additional PPE - this will be provided as appropriate.

While the requirement for testing has been relaxed, we ask that students/delegates only attend their course if they are fully well to do so - this is to ensure that fellow students/delegates and staff are protected and courses can continue to run.

If you have any issues or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us by email at

This course includes a mixture of classroom-based theory sessions, practical demonstrations, exercises, audio-visual displays and group discussions.

Upon completion of the course, you will gain the knowledge to:

  • Contribute to the safe cargo operations of oil and chemical tankers.
  • Take precautions to prevent hazards.
  • Apply occupational health and safety precautions and measures.
  • Respond to emergencies.
  • Take precautions to prevent pollution of the environment from the release of oil or chemicals.

The course is also available to industry professionals who do not require STCW Certification.

Those undertaking this training for STCW certification must have completed the Tanker Fire Fighting course, which meets the competence; carry out fire fighting operations as set out in tables A-V/1-1-1 and A-V/1-2-1 of the STCW Convention and Code 1978, as amended; and be in possession of the relevant certifications.

If you are not in possession of the tanker fire fighting certificate (which is a five-hour-stand-alone course), we offer this training.

The Tanker Fire Fighting certificate will also be issued on completion of the Advanced Fire Fighting course. Please note, there are prerequisites for enrolling on the Advanced Fire Fighting course, such as a Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting certificate, or equivalent - please see the course page for details.

The course is also available to industry professionals who do not require STCW certification.

Please see our Covid-19 statement and guidance for those attending maritime training and certification courses and exams at Warsash Maritime School and Solent University.
